How do you choose your kitchen knife based on your needs?

Comment choisir son couteau de cuisine en fonction de vos besoins ?

What should you think about before buying a knife?

First of all, it is necessary to know the reason for your future purchase. Is it a purchase to:

  • Complete a collection,
  • Replace a knife,
  • Make certain cutting tasks easier,
  • Other, ...

From that point on, you will be guided toward certain knives according to a few criteria.

What budget should you plan for buying a knife?

Although price does not always make the difference in terms of quality, it is important to know whether this purchase will often be useful to you or not. Let us say that a cooking enthusiast who uses their knife 3 to 4 times a month will surely not have the same needs as a cooking fanatic. To determine the price that is right for you when buying, you can decide in advance whether this purchase will be used often. The more or less noble materials of a knife will also influence the price significantly. However, they help ensure optimal and long-lasting quality.

An entry-level knife can therefore range from €5 to several hundred euros. Let your purchasing power and the quality of the materials guide you.

Which knife is suited to my use?

Indeed, it is not always easy to know exactly which shape suits our needs. At Maison Damas, we strive to guide you in our product pages and throughout our shop so as not to speak to you in overly complex terms. So if we have one piece of advice for you here, it would be to visit our shop and use the filters to find the blade best suited to your needs. Even though we do offer certain blades with rather "versatile" uses, you need to pay attention to your future use in order to make the most of your purchase.

And what about sharpness in all this, how can we make sure of it?

You are right to ask this question. It is impossible to test a knife's sharpness before buying it online. So before being disappointed, there are two main criteria you should look at before placing your order:

  • The blade material
  • The sharpening angle

Let us go through them point by point. The blade material is very important. Indeed, a ceramic knife may be fine when you buy it, but it will deteriorate very quickly and may even break. Then, there are several types of steel that can be found in our traditional kitchen knives, steak knives, and more. For our part, we have chosen Damascus steel. It is a material renowned for its hardness and reliability. So, if you want a quality knife, choose Damascus steel.

The sharpening angle also affects the quality of the cut. Indeed, we generally find 20-degree angles on almost all kitchen knives. We recommend choosing 15-degree angles on both sides of the blade. Thanks to this sharpening angle, you can have excellent sharpness and preserve it over time.

As you will have understood, when it comes to sharpness, you will need to look at the blade material as well as its sharpening angle.
